Transformer Material Knowledge
A. Core Material
Transformer core material mainly including iron, low silicon, high silicon. Steel sheet with silicon can reduce conductivity, increase resistivity, which can reduce the eddy current to decrease losses. Steel sheet with silicon are used to be called as silicon steel. Silicon steel’s quality highly affect transformer’s quality, which is usually called by magnetic flux density B. Iron sheet’s B value is 6000-8000, low silicon is 9000-11000, high silicon is 12000-16000.
B. Wound Transformers Materials
Enameled wire, cotton-covered wire, silk-covered wire are the most commonly used wires. Conductors require good conductive properties, heat insulating paint and have a certain corrosion resistance. Generally we’d better use Q2 high strength polyester enameled wire.
C. Insulating Material
For transformer winding, have to use insulating material to isolate between the coil frame layers and the windings. Generally transformer frame material can use paperboard phenolic, frame layers can use polyester film or telephone paper, between windings can use yellow wax cloth.
D. Impregnating Material
After winding, transformer should be impregnated with insulating paint, which can enhance mechanical strength, improve the insulation performance, extend service life. Usually, cresol varnish can be used as impregnated material.
Transformer can be used for almost all electronic products, whose principle is simple but it’s winding process will be different base on different occasions (for different purposes). The main function of the transformer including: voltage conversion, impedance transformation, isolation, regulator (magnetic saturation transformers) etc.. Transformer core shape used to be E and C type.
