Functionality

  1. Voltage Transformation: The primary function of a transformer substation is to step down the voltage level of the incoming electricity from high voltage (HV) or extra-high voltage (EHV) levels used for long-distance transmission to medium voltage (MV) or low voltage (LV) levels suitable for distribution to consumers.

  2. Power Distribution: Substations distribute this transformed electricity to various areas through a network of feeders and distribution lines.

  3. System Control and Protection: They incorporate control and protection systems to ensure the stability and safety of the power grid. This includes circuit breakers, relays, and transformers with built-in protective features to isolate faults and prevent cascading failures.

  4. Metering and Monitoring: Transformers substations also have metering equipment to measure the amount of electricity flowing in and out, and monitoring systems to track the operational status of the equipment.

Components

  1. Transformers: The heart of the substation, transformers are responsible for changing the voltage levels. There can be multiple transformers in a substation, each serving different purposes or providing redundancy.

  4. Busbars and Connectors: Busbars are thick conductors that carry high currents within the substation, connecting transformers, switchgear, and other equipment.

  5. Earthing System: A critical safety feature, the earthing system ensures the safe discharge of electrical energy into the ground in the event of a fault, protecting personnel and equipment.

Types

  1. Outdoor Substations: As the name suggests, equipment in these substations is installed in the open air, often on concrete platforms or steel structures. They are more common due to their cost-effectiveness and ease of expansion.

  2. Indoor Substations: These are enclosed within buildings, offering better protection against environmental factors like weather and pollution but at a higher cost.

  3. Gas Insulated Substations (GIS): In GIS substations, the major conducting parts are contained in sealed gas-filled compartments, usually with SF6 gas, which offers high insulation performance in a compact space, suitable for urban areas where space is limited.

  4. Rural/Urban Substations: Depending on their location and the load they serve, substations can be classified as rural (serving less populated areas) or urban (designed for densely populated cities).

Transformer substations are vital links in the electricity supply chain, enabling the reliable and efficient delivery of power to consumers while ensuring the overall stability and safety of the electrical grid.
