The Main Components of a Power Transformer

The core, typically made from laminated silicon steel, provides a low-reluctance path for magnetic flux. This design minimizes eddy current losses, ensuring efficient performance. The primary winding receives incoming energy, while the secondary winding delivers transformed voltage, with the ratio between their turns determining the voltage change.

Insulation is vital for safety and functionality. In oil-immersed units, insulating oil serves dual purposes: it acts as a coolant, dissipating heat generated during operation, and as a dielectric barrier, preventing short circuits. Dry-type transformers use robust solid insulation like epoxy resin for similar protection. The tank houses the active parts and, in liquid-filled units, withstands internal pressure while providing environmental protection. A conservator tank mounted above allows oil to expand and contract with temperature fluctuations. 

The tap changer is a crucial component for voltage regulation. It adjusts the number of active turns in the winding, fine-tuning the output voltage to compensate for load variations and input changes. Finally, bushings provide the interface for incoming and outgoing electrical connections, safely conducting current through the tank wall with high dielectric strength.
