Distribution transformers including Single-Phase & Three-Phase Transformers, Pad-Mounted & Pole-Mounted Transformers, Dry-Type & Oil-Filled Transformers, which step down the voltage from the high-voltage transmission system to consumers at the low-voltage level.
1. Transformer Types
1) Single-Phase Transformers: Commonly used in residential areas where the power demand is relatively low. They have two windings, one for the primary (high voltage) and one for the secondary (low voltage) side.
2) Three-Phase Transformers: Used in commercial and industrial applications requiring higher power capacity. They can be configured as three separate units (banked), or as a single unit with three separate windings.
3) Pad-Mounted Transformers: Typically found outdoors in residential neighborhoods, these are mounted on concrete pads and enclosed in weatherproof cabinets for protection and safety.
4) Pole-Mounted Transformers: As the name suggests, these are mounted on utility poles, often seen in rural areas or along streets, providing a space-saving solution.
5) Dry-Type Transformers: These use air or other non-liquid insulation materials, making them safer for indoor installations where fire safety is a concern.
6) Oil-Filled Transformers: More common in outdoor installations, they use oil as a coolant and insulator. The oil needs to be periodically checked and maintained for safety and efficiency.
2. Transformer Components
1) Core: Made of laminated steel sheets to reduce eddy current losses.
2) Windings: Consist of copper or aluminum conductors, wound around the core. The primary winding connects to the high voltage and the secondary to the low voltage side.
3) Insulation: Crucial for maintaining electrical separation between windings and the core, and can be solid, liquid, or SF6 gas.
4) Tanks or Casing: Houses the core and windings, protecting them from environmental factors. Can be made of steel and may be filled with oil for cooling and insulation.
3. Transformer Maintenance & Safety
Regular maintenance includes checking oil levels and quality (for oil type), inspecting for leaks or corrosion, and monitoring temperature and noise levels. Due to high voltages, transformers should always be handled by trained professionals.
