Transformer Core

Released: 2024-05-01   Visits:1780

A transformer core is a central component of an electrical transformer, which is a device used to transfer electrical energy from one circuit to another through electromagnetic induction. The core's primary function is to provide a path for the magnetic flux generated by the primary winding (input) to efficiently induce a voltage in the secondary winding (output).

The transformer core is typically made of thin laminations of ferromagnetic material, usually grain-oriented silicon steel or a metal alloy, stacked together. These materials are chosen for their high magnetic permeability, which allows them to support and guide the magnetic field with minimal energy loss due to eddy currents and hysteresis.

The lamination process involves coating each layer with a thin insulating film before stacking them. This insulation prevents current from flowing between the layers, reducing energy losses due to circular electric currents, known as eddy currents, that would otherwise be induced in the core by the changing magnetic field.

There are two main types of transformer core designs:

  1. Core Type: In this design, the windings are wound around two limbs of the core, which are connected by a central limb. This configuration is common in power transformers.

  2. Shell Type: Here, the windings are passed through the core window, and the core surrounds the windings. This design is more prevalent in distribution transformers and can handle higher currents due to its larger winding area.

The efficiency, size, and performance of a transformer are significantly influenced by the design and quality of its core. Advanced materials and manufacturing techniques, such as amorphous metals and laser welding of laminations, are being developed to further reduce energy losses and improve transformer efficiency.
