Transformer Abnormal Sound

  1. Loose Components: Vibrations or rattling sounds might indicate that internal components like clamps, bolts, or windings have become loose. This can lead to more severe damage if not tightened or replaced.

  2. Overloading: Transformers operating beyond designed capacity may produce a persistent humming or buzzing noise. Overloading can cause overheating and eventually insulation breakdown or failure.

  3. Internal Arcing: A sharp, crackling, or popping sound can be a sign of internal arcing, which occurs when there's a discharge of electricity across insulation or between windings. This is a severe condition that requires immediate attention as it can lead to explosions or fires.

  4. Partial Discharges: Similar to internal arcing but on a smaller scale, partial discharges occur when small electrical sparks develop in voids or imperfections in the insulation. They can generate a crackling noise and gradually degrade the insulation, leading to full-scale failure.

  5. Winding Faults: Abnormal sounds can also result from faults in the transformer windings, such as short circuits or open circuits. These can produce humming, buzzing, or even a louder mechanical noise if the fault causes physical movement within the transformer.

  6. Bushing Issues: Faulty or corroded bushings can create a buzzing or crackling noise due to improper current flow.

  7. Magnetostriction: Transformers naturally emit a low-level hum due to magnetostriction, the expansion and contraction of core materials under magnetic flux. However, if this sound becomes unusually loud, it could indicate a problem with the core or excessive flux density.

  8. Cooling System Malfunction: Transformers rely on cooling systems, such as oil circulation or fans, to maintain the right temperature. Faulty cooling systems, such as damaged fans or poor oil circulation, can lead to abnormal noises.
